Zimbabwe continues to strengthen its dairy sector, with national milk production surpassing 120 million litres in 2025, up from 114 million litres recorded a year earlier. The increase confirms steady progress towards milk self-sufficiency and reflects consistent growth in domestic agricultural output, as reported by
ZBC, a partner of TV BRICS.
Updated sector data indicate that the country is now approaching its estimated annual requirement of around 130 million litres. Production growth has been driven by both commercial farms and small-scale household producers, with non-commercial milk output consumed at the household level estimated at about seven million litres in 2025.
Milk production has shown sustained expansion over the past five years. Output has risen from approximately 70 million litres in 2020, with growth of around six per cent recorded between 2024 and 2025 alone. Improved rainfall patterns, along with supportive policy measures aimed at agricultural pricing and business conditions, have contributed to this upward trend.
The expansion of the dairy sector is also delivering wider economic benefits. Higher local production is supporting job creation, improving supply stability, and increasing the availability of domestically produced milk across formal retail channels.
