Malaysia’s airports record strong passenger growth ahead of 2026

Malaysia’s aviation sector recorded robust passenger growth in 2025, signalling a strong trajectory for further expansion in 2026, according to official transport statistics. This is reported by
BERNAMA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Total passenger movements across the country’s airports reached 15.53 million during the reporting period, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 11.2 per cent. The data highlight sustained recovery in air travel demand, driven by rising international connectivity and steady growth in domestic routes.

Authorities noted that international passenger traffic accounted for a significant share of the increase, underlining Malaysia’s strengthening position as a regional air transport hub. Domestic travel also continued to expand, supported by improving consumer confidence and higher mobility across key economic centres.

In December 2025 alone, passenger numbers rose by 15.5 per cent compared with the same month a year earlier, reaching more than 10 million travellers. Officials attributed this surge to seasonal travel demand, expanded flight schedules and the continued return of long-haul services.

Malaysia’s main international gateway handled over 6 million passengers during the period, marking an increase of nearly 11 per cent year on year. The steady rise in traffic is seen as an indicator of renewed airline confidence and growing passenger demand.

Transport authorities expect this positive trend to continue into 2026, supported by improved air connectivity, tourism recovery and regional economic growth. The performance of the aviation sector is also expected to contribute positively to the wider economy, particularly tourism, trade and services.
