China is preparing for an unprecedented rise in cross-border travel during the upcoming May Day holiday, with authorities forecasting record-breaking passenger flows between 1 and 5 May, reports
Global Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
According to the National Immigration Administration, the average number of daily inbound and outbound trips is expected to reach 2.25 million, marking the highest level ever recorded for the holiday period. On peak days, the figure could exceed 2.4 million crossings.
Major international aviation hubs are set to handle a significant share of the surge. Shanghai airport is projected to process around 102,000 daily border crossings, followed by Guangzhou airport with 55,000 and Beijing airport with approximately 49,000.
To manage the surge, authorities have implemented enhanced operational measures, including running all inspection channels at full capacity. Officials aim to keep waiting times for Chinese citizens below 30 minutes while ensuring safe, efficient, and orderly border procedures throughout the holiday period.
