Chile is set to build one of the largest water desalination complexes not only in the country, but in the whole of Latin America, as reported by
El Maipo, a partner of TV BRICS.
The main aim of the project is to supply water to northern Antofagasta and the La Negra industrial zone. The plant will be built in the Caleta Bolfin area, approximately 15 km from the city limits of Antofagasta, which is located in the north of the country on the Pacific coast.
Plans include laying around 480 km of pipelines, over 300 km of power lines and constructing 17 pumping stations.
The plant will draw seawater, desalinate it and supply it to the municipalities of Antofagasta, Sierra Gorda and Calama. The desalinated water will be used for drinking, industry, agriculture and resource extraction.
The project is estimated to cost over US$5 billion, making it one of the largest projects approved in the country in recent times.
