Egypt is preparing to launch the “Greening Cairo” initiative, a new urban development programme aimed at converting vacant and underutilised spaces into green areas as restoration work across the capital’s historic centre gathers pace, reports
Daily News Egypt, a TV BRICS partner.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance urban liveability, expand access to public green spaces and strengthen Cairo’s appeal as a global cultural and tourism destination.
Under the project, evacuated urban sites created through redevelopment and restoration programmes will be transformed into landscaped public areas, increasing the per capita share of green space in one of the Middle East’s largest metropolitan centres.
Officials stated that ongoing efforts to restore heritage buildings, upgrade surrounding infrastructure and revitalise public spaces are expected to reshape central Cairo into a major open-air cultural hub. The historic district is set to host a growing number of artistic, cultural and community events designed to attract both domestic and international visitors.
Plans also include the development of integrated tourism routes linking historic mosques, religious sites and cultural landmarks. The initiative aims to provide visitors with a more comprehensive experience of Egypt’s rich civilisational heritage while supporting sustainable tourism growth.
The latest measures reflect Egypt’s wider efforts to strengthen cultural tourism, preserve nationally significant heritage assets and promote sustainable urban development. As restoration projects continue, authorities expect the renewed historic centre to emerge as one of the region’s leading cultural and tourism destinations.
