KZN ANC delegation visits grieving Mahlaba family

Leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal, along with the party’s alliance partners, have visited the family home of the late Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba near Nquthu, in the north of the province, to pay their respects.

The former Newcastle Mayor and KwaZulu-Natal MEC died on Saturday after being struck by a vehicle while jogging in Newcastle.

The convenor of the ANC’s Provincial Task Team, Mike Mabuyakhulu, described Dr Mahlaba as a talented and committed leader.

Mabuyakhulu says Dr Mahlaba was a soft-spoken and humble leader who commanded respect across the political spectrum.

“We have lost a very intelligent leader, a man who was actually groomed in the ANC Youth League. A man who has actually led even as young as he is at 44 years old. He has been a Mayor of Newcastle; he has actually led as the chair of the Umbuso Kubheka region. He has been a former provincial treasurer, a former MEC for two portfolios. So, we have lost a very senior leader of the ANC.”

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal Legislature Speaker Legislature Speaker Nontembeko Boyce says apart from his leadership qualities, Dr Mahlaba also had a great sense of humour.

Fighting to control her emotions, Boyce says over the years she got to know not only Dr Mahlaba, but also his family and his generosity.

“Now that we were working together, I got to be introduced to his family, uMandlovu wethu, the children, you know his dogs, his livestock. I got to know that he’s more than just a comrade, he is a person who has a mission to live life to the fullest. In his living his life to the fullest, he ensured that he lives an impact. He was a giver.”
