Russia develops auto-calibration system for 3D printers

Ivan Aksentev, a postgraduate student at Omsk State Technical University (OmSTU), a partner of TV BRICS, has created a universal optoelectronic system that improves the predictability of 3D printing and reduces the time needed to configure equipment for new materials by a factor of 3–5. This was reported on the university’s
website.

The young scientist’s project, “Development of a hardware and software system for calibrating 3D printing systems”, was among the winners of a student start-up competition. This scientific development may be of interest to both private users and industrial enterprises with additive manufacturing facilities (a method of creating an object by sequentially adding material layer by layer based on a digital 3D model), where minimising defects and downtime has a direct impact on financial performance.

The main challenge in additive manufacturing is the need for repeated testing to optimise parameters. Ivan Aksentev’s system solves this problem in a single print cycle. The machine vision-based system analyses the geometry of the test sample, while a proprietary algorithm automatically generates recommendations for adjusting the process parameters.

The system is compatible with the most widely used technologies for creating three-dimensional objects: laser stereolithography, layer-by-layer filament deposition (plastic filament) and selective laser sintering.

It is noted that the researcher will receive a grant enabling them to continue work on the project’s software and organise the mass production of the system. The implementation of this development will help users to quickly adapt the equipment to any consumables without compromising product quality.
