Iran and Belarus move to deepen agricultural trade and joint investment

Iran and Belarus have agreed to step up agricultural cooperation, with officials discussing expanded trade in fertilisers, agricultural machinery and food products as well as opportunities for joint investment, as reported by
Tehran Times, a TV BRICS partner.

The talks took place between Akbar Fathi, Iran’s Deputy Agriculture Minister for Planning and Economic Affairs, and Yuri Gorlov, Belarus’s Minister of Agriculture and Food, on the sidelines of the 7th meeting of the Eurasian Economic Union’s Policy Council for Agriculture and Industry in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The officials reviewed existing agricultural and economic links and discussed ways to use the two countries’ production capacities to increase trade and investment.

A key focus was cooperation on the supply and trade of potash and phosphate fertilisers. The two sides discussed opportunities in agricultural machinery and equipment, including technology exchanges and potential joint investment.

Iran and Belarus are also looking to increase trade in agricultural and food products. Officials examined opportunities to expand exchanges involving poultry, dairy products and fruit, while discussing measures to make cross-border trade easier and give producers and exporters greater access to each other’s markets.

Both sides agreed to continue consultations on joint investment, agricultural trade, fertiliser supplies and farm machinery, with the aim of creating additional opportunities for economic cooperation.
