Today, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is celebrating his birthday.
The future Prime Minister was born in 1950 in Vadnagar to a family of tea merchants. In 1978, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Delhi, followed by a master’s degree in the same subject from the University of Gujarat.
Narendra Modi began his political career by joining the Hindu movement “Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh” (“National Volunteer Organisation”). In 1985, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (Indian People’s Party), where he served as General Secretary from 1998 to 2001.
From 2001 to 2014, he led the government of the state of Gujarat. During his tenure, the region actively attracted foreign investment, developed its infrastructure and international ties, and saw the electrification of most settlements.
Since 2014, Narendra Modi has served as Prime Minister of India. The cabinet he leads has implemented a number of national programmes, including the “Make in India” and “Digital India” initiatives.
As a result, the volume of foreign investment rose from US$25 billion in 2014 to US$45 billion in the 2018–2019 financial year.
In addition to his political activities, the Prime Minister is the author of a number of journalistic and literary works on socio-political and religious topics.
As one of the founding members of BRICS, India continues to play an active role in the group’s work. On the eve of Narendra Modi’s birthday, on 12–13 September 2026, the 18th BRICS Summit took place in New Delhi, during which the Prime Minister held a series of bilateral meetings with members of the group.
Summing up India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026, the Prime Minister stated that the member countries had agreed to establish an integrated system for responding to outbreaks of infectious diseases, a network of BRICS incubators and a start-up fund, the BRICS Connect initiative aimed at boosting employment, and many other initiatives.
The priorities of India’s Chairship centred on four areas: sustainability, innovation, cooperation, and stability.
