Indonesia plans to renovate 8,001 community health centres and construct 1,988 new facilities between 2027 and 2029 as part of a nationwide programme to modernise healthcare infrastructure and improve access to medical services, as reported by ANTARA.
The initiative also includes the revitalisation of 441 regional general hospitals, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Health.
Deputy Minister of Health Benyamin Paulus Octavianus said the construction of new community health centres, known locally as puskesmas, would help expand healthcare capacity in densely populated areas.
The programme will prioritise the modernisation of ageing medical infrastructure from 2027, alongside plans to equip all community health centres with mobile X-ray units.
“Moving forward, healthcare spending must shift from hospital treatment to primary care prevention,” Octavianus said during the inauguration of a new healthcare facility in Denpasar, Bali.
The national initiative will also bring significant changes to Bali’s healthcare network. Authorities plan to renovate 119 community health centres and completely rebuild four facilities. Another seven centres serving populations exceeding 60,000 people will be divided into smaller units to improve the organisation and accessibility of medical services.
Octavianus emphasised that infrastructure investment must be accompanied by the development of qualified medical personnel, including radiographers and specialist doctors.
“Purchasing medical equipment can be done quickly, but producing professionals like radiographers and specialist doctors takes time. Equipment procurement and human resource preparation must go hand in hand to realise excellent service,” he explained.
The nationwide programme is intended to strengthen Indonesia’s primary healthcare system by expanding medical infrastructure, improving preventive services and increasing access to healthcare across the country’s regions.
