The cinematic arts of the Federative Republic of Brazil are seeking to increase their international visibility through cooperation with TV BRICS. The international media network’s new partner in promoting Latin American cinema is the Franco Cultural Association (Portuguese: Associação Franco Cultural) from Rio de Janeiro. An agreement on joint activities was signed by Franco Cultural Director General Ailton Franco Jr. and TV BRICS CEO and Editor-in-Chief Janna Tolstikova.
The
Franco Cultural Association was founded in 2001 with the aim of developing cultural exchange in the field of cinema and audiovisual arts and promoting the achievements of Brazilian filmmaking. The organisation’s flagship project is the International Short Film Festival Curta Cinema. In March 2027, it will be held for the 36th time. The festival is a qualifying event for international awards, including the Oscars and BAFTA.
“One of the main goals of the Curta Cinema festival is to promote Brazilian short films and establish links between authors and directors from different regions of the world. The partnership with TV BRICS opens up a new avenue for this work, allowing BRICS countries to discover Brazilian films while also introducing our audiences to cinema from other countries. Short films are an ideal platform for discovering talent, artistic approaches and trends in audiovisual art. We believe that creative exchange can open up new opportunities for cooperation and international dialogue among filmmakers,” said Franco Cultural Director General Ailton Franco Jr.
Aleksandra Burman, Director of the International Cooperation Department at TV BRICS, emphasised the importance of cultural exchange in the BRICS+ format and the need to create conditions for professional interaction among experts from different countries. The exchange of audiovisual content, particularly works of cinematic art, plays a unique role in preserving national identity, fostering mutual understanding between peoples and bringing countries together to address common challenges. In her view, the Curta Cinema festival will undoubtedly attract the interest of the TV BRICS audience and introduce it to the distinctive creative potential of Brazilian directors.
Previously, the Panvision Cultural Association and Brasil Audiovisual Independente from Brazil joined TV BRICS cooperation aimed at promoting Latin American cinema. In the macroregion, the international media network also works in this area with the Cuban Institute of Art and Film Industry and Jumping Studios film company (Bolivia).
TV BRICS traditionally supports a number of film festivals in Latin America, including in Argentina, Bolivia and Cuba. In Brazil, it participates in the CineSonora International Music Documentary Film Festival and the BRICS Documentary Film Festival held at the Federal University of Latin American Integration.
