Egypt interested in building new units at El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant after 2030

Egypt is interested in building new units at the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant after 2030, as well as in joint projects with Russia to develop small and floating nuclear reactors. This was stated by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin. The talks took place during the Third Russia–Africa Summit.

The Egyptian President proposed developing cooperation on the creation of a research reactor and a testing centre, as well as in uranium and rare-metal extraction. At the same time, he stressed that Cairo is interested in completing the construction of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant within the established timeframe.

Speaking about the prospects for bilateral relations, El-Sisi noted Egypt’s interest in expanding economic ties.

Another area of cooperation is the establishment of the Russian Industrial Zone in Egypt. El-Sisi confirmed Egypt’s readiness to provide the Russian management company with incentives, preferences and the necessary support to launch the project.

At the meeting, Putin cited data on the growth of trade between the two countries.

“Bilateral trade continues to grow steadily, rising by 14 per cent in the first eight months of this year alone. In 2025, it reached record high levels, exceeding US$10 billion for the first time,” the Russian President said.

Putin noted that since 2022, Russia’s total trade with African countries has increased by one and a half times and exceeded US$27 billion. A significant share of this volume is accounted for by Egypt.

Cooperation between the two countries is also developing in tourism. More than 1.2 million Russian tourists visited Egypt in the first half of 2026, compared with around 1.5 million during the whole of 2025.

Russia and Egypt are developing relations on the basis of the Treaty on Comprehensive Partnership and Strategic Cooperation. The next, 16th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission is scheduled to take place in Egypt in 2027.

Earlier, the leaders met at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
