In an exclusive commentary for
NAN, a partner of TV BRICS, Mathew Adamu, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, highlighted the central role of agriculture in Africa’s development agenda ahead of the G20 summit in Johannesburg.
With more than 60 per cent of Africans employed in the sector, he noted that the continent still largely exports raw materials rather than processed goods – a gap that stronger international cooperation can help address.
Adamu emphasised that enhanced partnership with the G20 can support Africa in increasing agricultural productivity and accelerating the shift towards processing and industrialisation. This transition, he said, is essential not only for strengthening food security but also for generating higher incomes, expanding GDP and creating pathways out of poverty for millions across the continent.
He added that the Johannesburg summit’s overarching theme provides an opportunity to tackle key socio-economic challenges while positioning Africa to compete more effectively in the global economy. By developing its agricultural value chains and expanding industrial capacity, the continent can secure more sustainable and inclusive growth.
The TV BRICS International Media Network is an officially accredited media outlet at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, which will take place this year on 22–23 November.
