AI assistant helps to reduce workload of doctors in Kazakhstan’s Akmola region

The pilot project has been implemented in four polyclinics in the region

The pilot implementation of a digital assistant for doctors based on artificial intelligence technologies continues in the Akmola region of Kazakhstan.

The aim of the project is to reduce time spent on documentation and improve access to medical care. Four polyclinics are participating in the project, where 38 general practitioners are working with the system.

According to the project initiator, surgeon Sultan Dzhumabayev, the technology allows optimising the interaction between doctor and patient.

He noted that the solution was a response to the high workload faced by doctors in their daily work: “Too many routine processes take up a doctor’s time. We thought that a doctor should actually be doing doctoring, not paperwork.”

The developers estimate that up to 30 per cent of doctors’ working time is spent on filling out medical documentation. In conditions of staff shortage, this directly affects the timing of diagnosis and the start of treatment. This is reported by
Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS.

The digital assistant is connected to a microphone and in the reception mode forms an outpatient card, including the main complaints, anamnesis and examination results. The system also offers a provisional diagnosis with up to 80 per cent accuracy based on clinical protocols. Treatment decisions, as emphasised, remain solely with the doctor.

Gulnaz Sharipbaeva, a district therapist, shared that the new technology has saved time and increased the duration of the examination.

“It is actually very convenient – we get a card with complete medical information, starting from complaints to objective examination. It gives us the opportunity to give the patient more attention,” she noted.

In the short term, the project is planned to expand to 300 sites.
