Archaeologists identify new rock engravings site in northeast Brazil

Archaeologists in Brazil have confirmed the existence of four prehistoric rock art sites in the state of Maranhao, including one previously unknown, according to the official
website of the Brazilian government.

Cleberson Carlos of the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) inspected the region of Sao Domingos do Maranhao, where researchers had suspected the presence of such sites since the 1980s. The survey confirmed three previously recorded sites: Abrigo Bacupari, Casa de Pedra and Cocal de Dentro, and identified a new one, Casa de Pedra do Gleison, containing rock engravings.

According to Carlos, Abrigo Bacupari preserves the most complete examples, while the other sites retain only faint traces of paintings. All four are located in sandstone formations.

Local communities have also played a key role in conservation. Iphan has pledged to continue monitoring and introducing preservation measures to protect these rare records of Maranhao’s prehistoric past.
