Argentina’s San Juan Province officially obtains geographical indication for olive oil
Obtaining such a label strengthens the reputation of local producers
The province of San Juan has officially received a geographical indication for its extra virgin olive oil. A geographical indication is a form of intellectual property that, by law, grants producers in the region exclusive rights to use the corresponding name. This is reported by
Ahora San Juan, a partner of TV BRICS.
The Secretary of the Nation of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Sergio Iraeta approved the production protocol for the geographical indication “Extra Virgin Olive Oil San Juan.” The decree includes approved logos for product labeling and mandates the use of a distinctive sign on exports. The Association of Olive Producers of the Province of San Juan has been tasked with monitoring compliance with the new requirements.
Miguel Moreno, the Province’s Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Agro-Industry, noted that each bottle of extra virgin olive oil will now indicate San Juan as its origin. “This labeling allows us to enter new markets and offer products at different prices, which will strengthen the reputation of our producers,” the Sergio Iraeta said.
Obtaining a geographical indication opens up new opportunities for local farmers not only to promote their oil internationally.
