ASEAN summit kicks off in Malaysia

Top of the agenda – strengthening interregional ties and boosting resilience to trade and economic crises

The 46th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has begun in Kuala Lumpur. This is reported by
Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim opened the plenary session, calling on ASEAN member states to work together and remain committed to sustainable and equitable development.

“Peace, stability and prosperity in ASEAN depend on an open, inclusive international order, which is based on the free flow of trade and capital”

He also emphasised the importance of the first-ever summit between ASEAN, China and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), noting that China remains the region’s largest trading partner.

In 2025, Malaysia holds the ASEAN chairmanship and is hosting the summit and related meetings.

Representatives of all six GCC countries are participating, followed by an economic summit involving China. According to the Prime Minister, this highlights the region’s renewed focus on economic priorities.

Earlier, in an exclusive interview with TV BRICS, Anwar Ibrahim stated that during Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN, the country will prioritise economic development and the transition to green energy.
