At least five people die in India as heavy rains lash country

At least five people have died as a powerful cyclone struck the Indian city of Kolkata, reports
News9, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to local authorities, some victims were electrocuted in waterlogged areas where power lines had fallen. In the worst-affected districts, energy companies have already cut off electricity supply.

“So far, we have received information of four deaths due to electrocution in different places in the city,” said Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim.

The metropolis’s transport infrastructure has come to a halt: dozens of flights have been cancelled and metro train services suspended. Many central highways are flooded, leaving thousands of residents unable to leave their homes.

The local meteorological centre has declared a red weather alert for the entire south of the state, warning of continued heavy rains with thunderstorms and winds of up to 40 km/h in the coming hours. All emergency services have been placed on high alert.

According to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), reports
ANI, since 20 June destructive monsoons have claimed 451 lives, 262 of which were directly linked to natural disasters.

In their July
declaration in Rio de Janeiro, BRICS leaders stressed that urban infrastructure is increasingly affected by extreme weather events. They pledged to “improve national disaster risk reduction systems and capacities to reduce disaster-related damage and protect infrastructure.”
