Belarus targets expanded trade and investment with Indonesia under EAEU free trade talks

Belarus is placing a strategic focus on strengthening ties with countries of the Global South, Vice Prime Minister Viktor Karankevich stated during the Strategic Forum on the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)–Indonesia free trade agreement. This is reported by
BelTa, a partner of TV BRICS.

Speaking at the event, Karankevich emphasised Belarus’s priorities as chair of the EAEU this year, highlighting Southeast Asia and Indonesia as key partners for trade and investment development.

“Despite the geographic distance, Belarus and Indonesia share common goals in building constructive foreign relations based on mutual trust and respect,” Karankevich said.

Belarus has been actively expanding its global engagement, joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and becoming a BRICS member last year. Indonesia’s recent accession as a full BRICS member opens new avenues for dialogue and collaboration aimed at mutual economic growth.

“Our economies complement each other. Belarus exports essential food products and fertilisers that support Indonesia’s food security, while importing palm and cocoa oil, household goods, and pharmaceuticals,” Karankevich explained. “We see significant potential to expand cooperation across a broad range of sectors and develop new joint projects.”

The forum also highlighted Belarus’s readiness to implement a free trade agreement between the EAEU and Indonesia. Following presidential approval on 24 November, the framework agreement provides a foundation for boosting trade and economic ties.

“The creation of a free trade zone marks a new chapter in EAEU–Indonesia relations and will greatly enhance mutually beneficial collaboration,” the Vice Prime Minister noted.

Belarusian business representatives from machinery, petrochemicals, and agriculture attended the forum, engaging with Indonesian counterparts to explore partnership opportunities. Karankevich expressed confidence that the event would lead to practical agreements and projects fostering economic development and improving living standards in both regions.
