Brazil allocates US$4.7 million to strengthen public pharmaceutical care

The programme prioritises municipalities with up to 500,000 residents and lower Human Development Index rankings

The Brazilian Ministry of Health has announced a release of approximately US$4.7 million to strengthen pharmaceutical care within the Unified Health System (SUS) across 428 municipalities nationwide. The funds will be disbursed in 2025 and aim to support improvements in infrastructure and service delivery.

Of the total, more than US$2.8 million will go towards setting up facilities, while over US$1.9 million will support the ongoing maintenance of services. The resources will be transferred in a single instalment to Municipal Health Funds and must be used to improve physical spaces, acquire equipment, and maintain services.

According to Fernanda De Negri, head of the Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation, and the Economic-Industrial Health Complex, the federal government resumed support in 2023. Since then, the programme has reached 1,289 municipalities, totalling around US$14.7 million in investments.

The goal is to ensure pharmaceutical services are adequately structured and capable of efficiently serving SUS users. The programme prioritises municipalities with up to 500,000 residents and lower Human Development Index rankings, aiming to reach all 5,570 municipalities by 2027.
