Brazil powers its industry as renewables dominate energy mix

Brazil has one of the cleanest energy mixes in the world and is increasingly relying on renewables to drive its economy. According to the 2025 National Energy Balance, renewables supplied 64.4 per cent of the energy used by industry in 2024, up from 64.7 per cent in 2023.

The report, released by the
Ministry of Mines and Energy, shows renewables gaining ground in industrial use. Electricity accounted for 22 per cent of total demand, with 88.2 per cent of it generated from clean sources. Sugarcane bagasse followed with 21.3 per cent, while other fuels included black liquor, firewood, coal, natural gas, charcoal, fuel oil and others.

Energy demand has risen in several key industries where power is a vital input. Mining and pelletising recorded the sharpest increase at 8.4 per cent, followed by paper and pulp at 4.6 per cent and non-ferrous metals and metallurgy at 3.2 per cent.

Overall, Brazil consumed 288.3 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2024. Industry accounted for 91.4 million tonnes, while together with transport the two sectors represented nearly 65 per cent of all energy used in the country.
