Brazil to build its first underwater transport tunnel

The project will involve an investment of more than US$1 billion through a public-private partnership

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced the tender for the construction of the first underwater tunnel in Brazil, which will connect the cities of Santos and Guaruja, on the coast of Sao Paulo.

The construction will begin in 2026, with an estimated completion time of five years, according to
Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

With a total length of 1.5 kilometres, the tunnel will pass under the channel of the busiest port in the country and will have three lanes in each direction.

It is estimated that the infrastructure will reduce travel time between cities by 50 minutes and optimise the use of the port. It will also generate around 9,000 direct and indirect jobs.
