According to statistics compiled by the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Development, this year’s carnival added US$143,5 million to the country’s national economy.

This is six per cent more than last year, when foreign tourists spent US$134,9 million on the festivities.

The majority of foreign tourists attended the carnival in Rio de Janeiro (68,890).

The second state with the highest number of foreign visitors during the festivities was Sao Paulo (48,978), followed by Minas Gerais (31,355), Bahia (19,683) and Pernambuco (7,553).

The state of Rio de Janeiro had the greatest impact on the economy, where foreign tourists spent R$273,6 million (about $55 million, or 30,1 per cent). This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

In 2023, the South American giant returned to pre-pandemic Covid-19 levels in terms of international tourists – nearly six million.

The country also broke the record for resource inflows with US$6,9 billion.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the most symbolic in Brazil and is considered by experts to be the greatest spectacle in the world.
