Experts from 50 countries have gathered in Chile for the 11th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks, which runs until 12 September in the Araucania region, reports
Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
The sessions are taking place in Kutralkura, the only Chilean site on UNESCO’s geological heritage list. Covering 12,000 square kilometres across seven municipalities in the Andes, Kutralkura, meaning “stone of fire” in the Mapudungun language, combines volcanoes, rivers and mountains with the ancestral worldview of the Mapuche people.
The conference will highlight how geoparks serve as living spaces where science, conservation and culture intersect, with communities driving sustainable development. Participants will discuss recent research and share experiences on subjects ranging from geology to sustainable tourism.
