
China is advancing the application of perovskite photovoltaic technology in space with the development of the homegrown rollable solar wing prototype. The system is preparing to enter the in-orbit testing phase, marking a transition from laboratory research towards engineering applications, reports

The solar wing is designed to optimise the use of space during satellite launches. In its stored configuration, the solar wing can be rolled into a compact reel approximately the diameter of a thermos flask and attached to a satellite’s side wall. Once in orbit, the wing deploys smoothly through a passive drive mechanism, enabling controlled extension and retraction.
Compared with conventional foldable solar wings, the prototype is 25-30 per cent lighter and has a storage ratio of 35:1. Its super-elastic memory composite material allows the wing to be rolled rather than folded, while deployment requires movement in a single direction. These characteristics can help increase available payload space and support multi-satellite launch configurations.
The technology is designed for a range of spacecraft, including micro-nano satellites and CubeSats. A single wing can provide power for smaller spacecraft, while multiple wings can be combined to increase energy output for low-Earth-orbit communication and remote-sensing constellations, space computing nodes and deep-space missions.
Experts noted that perovskite solar wings are still undergoing technological development, with service life and resistance to the space environment among the key areas for further research. Developers is applying high-throughput artificial intelligence to optimise material formulations and accelerate improvements in cell performance.
The wing prototype will next undergo in-orbit testing. Developers have also launched a space power station plan for 2030, envisaging the phased development of a space-based energy network covering low Earth orbit, medium and high Earth orbits and lunar space. According to experts, China’s established photovoltaic industry provides a strong technological foundation for advancing space energy systems.
