China and Saudi Arabia begin construction of ethylene production project

The base will be built in eastern China

In Fujian Province, the comprehensive construction of the main facility of the Sino-Saudi ethylene production project has started.

The construction of the project with a total investment of 44.8 billion yuan, about US$6.3 billion, is being built at the Gulei Petrochemical Base in Fujian. The project is being constructed at the Gulei petrochemical base located in the Fujian city of Zhangzhou. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the plan, the construction of the project will be completed in 2026, with the maximum ethylene production volume of 1.8 million tonnes per year.

Gulei Petrochemical Base is one of the seven largest petrochemical bases in China. It has 15 operating facilities and 12 other facilities under construction.

Ethylene is widely used in industrial applications. It is used to make polyethylene. Ethylene is also used to accelerate the ripening of fruits, such as tomatoes, melons, oranges, mandarins, lemons, bananas; and to defoliate plants.
