China and South Africa to conduct joint lunar exploration programme

China’s National Space Administration (CNSA) has announced that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been inked between the space agencies of China and South Africa. This MOU signifies their commitment to collaborate on the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) programme.

The collaboration marks a significant expansion of their partnership, encompassing not only near-Earth space but also lunar exploration and deep space endeavors. This joint effort is expected to advance space science and technology development in both nations. South Africa’s participation underscores its determination to progress in the field of space exploration.

The two sides will have extensive cooperation in engineering implementation, operation and application of equipment, education and training for ILRS.

The two national space agencies are also cooperating on the exchange and application of remote sensing data as well as ground stations of satellite communication systems under the BRICS cooperation on Earth remote sensing satellite constellation, as reported by
