China launches initiative to promote ancient preservation technologies among Belt and Road countries

China is set to broaden the international application of its cultural heritage preservation technologies, using the Dunhuang model as a blueprint for protecting ancient sites along the Belt and Road, officials announced during the 2025 Global Mayors Dialogue in Dunhuang. This is reported by
China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to Su Bomin, Director of the Dunhuang Academy and the head of the cultural relics protection team, China has developed a comprehensive system for conserving murals, sculptures, and grotto temples – practices that have already been adopted at major cultural heritage sites across the country. He added that the next plan is to expand such efforts to the protection of cultural relics in Belt and Road countries, including Kyrgyzstan.

The move is part of a broader programme to implement the Global Civilisation Initiative, enhancing cross-border cooperation in cultural preservation and fostering deeper mutual understanding among nations.

Experts highlighted Dunhuang’s role as a global model for balancing preservation with innovation. Once a key crossroads of the ancient Silk Road, the city now combines traditional conservation methods with cutting-edge digital tools such as the Digital Dunhuang project, which allows both Chinese and foreign researchers to access high-resolution reproductions of ancient murals and sculptures.

Delegates from nine countries took part in the event, emphasising joint action to safeguard cultural diversity and heritage sustainability. Participants agreed that shared expertise and technology exchange are crucial for strengthening international collaboration in conservation.

Experts claimed that through partnerships with cities in Asia and the Middle East, Dunhuang’s cultural protection programme aims to become a central driver of heritage-based development and dialogue among civilisations.
