Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his full support for accelerating Malaysia’s accession as a full member of the BRICS group. This is reported by

“This is a great honor and a sign of confidence in our country’s role on the global stage,” Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said after talks with Xi Jinping in Beijing.

During the talks, both leaders also focused on strengthening bilateral ties, building on the momentum from Xi’s state visit to Malaysia in April, which saw the signing of 31 memorandums of understanding and agreements.

Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s support for key Chinese initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), while congratulating Xi on hosting a successful Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

China has remained Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years, with bilateral trade totaling US$106 billion in 2024. Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to boosting high-value exports, including electronics, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, as well as oil and gas.

Adding to the momentum, Malaysia’s Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz emphasised that the country is well-positioned to become China’s key trading partner.

“Malaysia is ready to be China’s key trading partner, supported by initiatives such as the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Semiconductor Strategy,” he said, stressing Malaysia’s role as an ASEAN gateway with a market of nearly 680 million people.

He added that as ASEAN chair, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has invited Chinese companies to use Malaysia as their entry point into the region.

“I am confident that this collaboration will drive economic growth and create more high-quality jobs for Malaysians,” Tengku Zafrul noted, highlighting ongoing efforts to diversify Malaysia’s semiconductor industry and explore new partnerships with China.
