China’s AI industry surpasses US$97.5 billion as digital economy accelerates

Generative AI products have become widely used by the public, particularly for question-and-answer tasks

China’s artificial intelligence (AI) industry exceeded approximately US$97.5 billion in 2024, maintaining an annual growth rate of over 20 per cent for several consecutive years, as reported by
Global Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

The official data highlights China’s growing influence in the global AI sector and the expanding role of digital technologies in driving high-quality economic and social development.

By June 2025, China’s internet user base had reached 1.123 billion, with an internet penetration rate of 79.7 per cent. Notably, the number of internet users aged 60 and above rose to 161 million, while rural internet users reached 322 million, illustrating inclusive digital growth across age groups and geographic areas.

Specialists note that generative AI experienced significant development in the first half of 2025, with rapid progress in both technology and practical applications.

Moreover, generative AI products have become widely used by the public, particularly for question-and-answer tasks, which account for over 80 per cent of user interactions.

These technologies are now embedded in a wide range of sectors, from office collaboration and inclusive education to industrial design and digital content creation, contributing to the development of an integrated smart application ecosystem across the economy.
