Direct flights boost Filipino tourism to Russia amid growing bilateral ties

Russia and the Philippines are moving to strengthen economic and cultural ties, with direct flights set to enhance two-way tourism and new opportunities emerging in trade, agriculture, energy, and innovation. This is reported by the
official website of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation.

The initiatives were announced during the fourth meeting of the Joint Russian-Philippine Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, which brought together more than 100 representatives from government, business, and industry associations.

Officials highlighted the growing demand for Russian exports to the Philippines, while Manila reaffirmed its readiness to welcome more Russian products and foster investment in research and high-tech development.

Enhanced maritime routes have already been established, linking Manila with Russian ports via transshipment in East Asia. Looking ahead, the introduction of direct charter flights from Russian cities, including Irkutsk, Blagoveshchensk, and Khabarovsk, to Boracay in October is expected to boost tourism flows in both directions. Russian officials emphasised that easier travel options would encourage Filipino visitors to explore Siberia and the Russian Far East, regions rich in cultural heritage and natural landscapes.

Tourism cooperation has already shown progress: in the first half of 2025, the number of Russian travellers to the Philippines rose by more than 23 per cent compared with the same period the previous year. Analysts believe that reciprocal travel opportunities will help build people-to-people contacts and stimulate regional economies.

Cultural diplomacy is also on the agenda. Moscow and Manila are preparing a renewed cooperation programme for 2026–2028, with plans to hold “Moscow Days” in the Philippine capital in 2026 to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
