Dr Ferrus to receive Special Provincial Official Funeral in Worcester

The funeral of internationally renowned South African poet and activist Dr Diana Ferrus will take place today in Worcester in the Western Cape.

She has been accorded a Special Provincial Official Funeral, Category 2.

Ferrus died two weeks ago in Cape Town at the age of 72.

She is best known for her 1998 poem “I’ve Come To Take You Home”, which is a tribute to Sarah Baartman.

The poem played a key role in the repatriation of the remains of Baartman from France to South Africa.

The bereaved family’s spokesperson Laniëlle Hartzenberg says, “I know she was someone that was for everybody, and everybody who knew her knows that the love she spread was a Diana Ferrus effect. Total charisma. And we want to tell everyone thank you for being part of our lives and especially being part of her life.”
