Dubai Can initiative reduces use of plastic water bottles in UAE
In two years since the launch of Dubai Can, a city-wide sustainability initiative, the use of 500ml single-use plastic water bottles has been significantly reduced. As part of the programme, 50 public water stations have been placed at strategic locations across the city, including parks and tourist hotspots. Nearly nine million litres of water have been dispensed through these stations.
The Dubai Can initiative was founded on 15 February 2022 by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council. This is reported by
ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.
The main objective of the project is to reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles and engage residents and visitors in building a more sustainable future by promoting wildlife and marine conservation.
The initiative also supports the Dubai City Masterplan 2040 and the UAE’s efforts to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals and UAE NetZero 2050 targets.
