The city is known for its significant Zulu heritage and offers access to traditional cultural sites and experiences. Its coastline features extensive beaches, while the surrounding region includes several wildlife reserves, providing opportunities to observe a range of African species.
Marine tourism is a notable aspect of Durban’s offering. The area is recognised for scuba diving sites and seasonal events such as the winter Sardine Run, which attracts various marine animals including sharks, dolphins, whales, and seabirds.
Durban receives approximately 186,000 international and 2.8 million domestic visitors annually. The city’s tourism infrastructure supports both leisure and wildlife tourism and contributes to the regional economy.
With its combination of coastal, cultural, and wildlife resources, Durban is projected to remain an important destination in Africa’s travel landscape in 2026.
