Editor-in-Chief of CGTN Russian Service calls on BRICS media to unite in building fair information space

The TV BRICS International Media Network presents a special project for the 20th anniversary of BRICS: “Global Media Briefing.” Expert commentary from representatives of the leading media of BRICS+ countries, partners of the media network, covers issues of shaping a unified global agenda, building a multipolar system of global media communications, current trends and key events of the past 20 years for the development of media discourse, and forecasts for the further evolution of the media landscape.

The Editor-in-Chief of the Russian Service of China Global Television Network (CGTN), part of China Media Group, Huang Yinan, called on the media of the BRICS countries to join efforts in building a Eurasian information space based on the principles of fairness, multipolarity and the dissemination of reliable information.

“We fully share the idea put forward and promoted by TV BRICS: that countries should join efforts to jointly build a Eurasian information space based on the principles of fairness, multipolarity and a commitment to the dissemination of reliable information. As rightly noted by President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, to effectively address the common challenges facing humanity, it is essential to firmly adhere to the concept of a ‘community of shared future for mankind’. On the basis of equality and mutual benefit, we should strive for cooperation and shared success, collectively voicing the positions of developing countries and emerging markets – this is the historical mission of the media of the BRICS countries,” Huang Yinan said exclusively to TV BRICS.

Huang Yinan proposed three areas for the future work of international media. The first, he said, is the role of the media as a bridge in advancing cooperation. According to the Editor-in-Chief, equal interaction between states remains a primary aspiration, and the media bear a special responsibility for shaping a constructive public discourse orientated towards mutual benefit. He noted that CGTN has established partnerships with 2,900 media organisations in 190 countries and regions, promoting equal dialogue with colleagues around the world.

The second area, in his view, should be to facilitate the formation of a pluralistic information landscape. Huang Yinan recalled that CGTN’s motto, “See the Difference”, implies providing global audiences with comprehensive information from diverse perspectives.

“The media of the BRICS countries and developing states must strengthen cooperation, jointly promoting the formation of a balanced and multi-voiced media environment. We advocate building a community with a shared future for mankind, not to replace one system with another, but to seek pathways towards shared prosperity, equal participation and shared responsibility among countries with different ideologies and social systems in international affairs. The mass media are called upon to contribute to achieving this goal,” he added.

As a third priority, Huang Yinan identified the pursuit of objectivity and accuracy in reporting. He stressed that in the digital age, the principle of ‘truthfulness as the foundation of news’ is gaining particular relevance. The Editor-in-Chief spoke out against substituting facts with opinions and manipulating information to support preconceived narratives. He also cited data according to which, in 2025, more than 40 million foreign citizens visited China. “With their own eyes, they saw a free, prosperous and safe country, discovering with surprise how far stereotypes […] diverge from reality,” Huang Yinan noted, emphasising that journalism must speak through facts.

Huang Yinan recalled that CGTN is part of China Media Group. Over the past decade, the broadcaster has grown into a comprehensive media brand comprising six television channels, one video news agency, several radio stations, social media accounts, mobile applications and websites.

The Editor-in-Chief highly praised cooperation with TV BRICS. Over the past decade, the parties have achieved substantial results in news exchange, content sharing and the mutual broadcasting of thematic programmes. In his remarks, Huang Yinan expressed confidence that friendly interaction between media outlets from different countries serves as a driving force in building a fair global information ecosystem.
