Egypt received a Guinness World Records certificate recognising Ain Sokhna Port as the world’s deepest land-based artificial port basin, with a depth of 19 metres. Guinness World Records adjudicator Kanzi El Dafrawy confirmed that all Guinness World Records requirements were met and officially declared Ain Sokhna Port the new world record holder for the deepest land-based artificial port basin.This is reported by

Republic’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir said the development aligns with directives from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to capitalise on Egypt’s strategic location on the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, as well as the global importance of the Suez Canal. More than 200 Egyptian national companies contributed to the project. The goal is to transform Ain Sokhna into a central port on the Red Sea and a key gateway for Egypt’s eastern coast, supporting exports, imports, and transit trade.
He added that the project forms part of the Ministry of Transport’s comprehensive maritime development strategy under Egypt vision 2030. The plan focuses on modernising ports, expanding quay infrastructure, increasing port areas, and building a competitive national maritime fleet capable of transporting up to 25 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2030.
Another pillar of the strategy involves partnerships with leading global terminal operators and shipping lines to boost port efficiency, attract more vessels, and expand transit trade through Egyptian ports.
As part of the Ain Sokhna upgrade, five new basins were excavated to depths of up to 19 metres, alongside extensive dredging works, new quays, breakwaters, internal roads, and a railway network integrated into Egypt’s multimodal transport system, including the high-speed electric rail line. These upgrades aim to reduce logistics costs and improve cargo handling efficiency.
