Ethiopian Prime Minister calls for independent development of AI in Africa

He made the announcement at the Ethiopian Tech Expo 2025

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said that Africa is entering a new era where artificial intelligence developed on the continent has the potential to drive inclusive growth and contribute to the realisation of Agenda 2063. This is reported by
ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Speaking at the AI for Africa Forum held at the Ethiopian Tech Expo 2025 under the theme “Leveraging AI for Africa’s Prosperity & Collaboration”, the Head of Government emphasised the importance of Africa’s self-reliant approach to digital innovation.

Abiy Ahmed noted that Ethiopia is leading by example by focusing on the development of AI, digital infrastructure and training. Key initiatives include the establishment of the Ethiopian AI Institute, the introduction of a digital identity card, and the “5 Million Coders” programme.

According to the prime minister, these steps are already yielding real results and demonstrate how vision can translate into action.

Looking ahead to 2030, he emphasised that Africa must shape the development of AI according to its own principles – ethical, inclusive, and sustainable – so that no individual is left behind.
