Expert: BRICS technological advances drive global shift towards sustainable agriculture

BRICS-led innovations are being adopted in other developing countries, promoting knowledge exchange and capacity building

Technological innovation in BRICS member states is reshaping global agricultural systems, offering powerful tools for sustainable farming and placing the group at the forefront of global food security efforts, as stated by Hossein Shirzad, an academic researcher from Shahid Beheshti University.

According to an expert commentary published by
Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS, BRICS nations are leading a transformation in agriculture through strategic investment in precision farming, biotechnology, and data-driven solutions. These advances enable more efficient use of water, fertilisers, and pesticides, while minimising environmental degradation and resource waste.

For instance, China’s large-scale application of satellite imagery and drones enhances real-time crop monitoring and resource optimisation, while Brazil has significantly improved crop yields through the development of genetically modified pest-resistant soybeans. These innovations are setting new global benchmarks for productivity and sustainable agricultural practices.

According to Hossein Shirzad, as BRICS countries strengthen their positions in global agricultural trade, their technological developments are influencing global supply chains and trade patterns. Brazil’s breakthroughs in agricultural biotechnology have reinforced its role as a leading exporter of soy and beef, while China continues to assert its influence in grain and vegetable markets.

Moreover, BRICS-led innovations are being adopted in other developing countries, promoting knowledge exchange and capacity building. The group’s emerging leadership in agritech signals a shift towards a more multipolar, innovation-driven global agricultural order, the expert said.

As BRICS+ continues to evolve as a platform for cooperation among emerging economies, its role in shaping the future of global agriculture is expected to grow significantly, the source claims.
