In an exclusive commentary for TV BRICS, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Ahram Weekly and Ahram Online, Ezzat Ibrahim, noted that the meeting represents an unprecedented opportunity for Africa and the wider Global South. For the first time, he said, the agenda is set to give substantial attention to the issues facing low-income countries – from poverty to sustainability and climate change.
Ibrahim highlighted that this year’s discussions will focus on practical measures to support renewable energy development in developing countries and to strengthen international approaches to advance inclusive finance and sustainable prosperity. He emphasised that the active participation of South Africa and other Global South nations is helping to drive constructive dialogue with emerging and established economies alike.
He also pointed to the G20’s potential to complement the work of the United Nations by fostering cooperation and innovative solutions. Ibrahim expressed optimism that the Johannesburg summit could help major economies find common ground and provide the UN with “a new platform, a new hope” to advance the Sustainable Development Goals with broader, collaborative engagement.
The TV BRICS International Media Network is an officially accredited media outlet at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, which will take place this year on 22–23 November.
