The Summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) is an important platform for developing solutions aimed at advancing global cooperation and supporting the rapidly growing populations of the countries of the Global South. This opinion was shared in an exclusive commentary for TV BRICS by the Dean of the Faculty of International Economic Relations at the Financial University under the Government of Russia, Pavel Seleznev.
The expert noted that such meetings of the leaders of the world’s major economies are always “a certain plus”.
“The population, which is currently growing rapidly in the countries of the Global South, certainly requires attention and needs various initiatives aimed at establishing this very balance or parity in terms of reducing inequality. So this can only be welcomed,” the expert added.
Seleznev expressed hope that the final outcomes of the summit would become practical benchmarks for the countries.
“And one would like to hope that those initiatives, those decisions that will be adopted following the summit and that will form the basis of the agreements […] will indeed become guiding principles in the policy of the individual member states,” he noted.
Commenting on the role of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (UN), the expert described them as “beacons or reference points to which it is necessary to aspire”. He added that continuity in pursuing the UN goals is extremely important, regardless of changes in the domestic politics of the G20 countries.
The TV BRICS International Media Network is an officially accredited media outlet at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, which will take place this year on 22–23 November.
