Experts from ASEAN countries express interest in cooperation with Russia in green energy

Energy specialists from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) discussed with Russian experts the prospects for joint projects in the field of renewable energy sources (RES) and green energy. The meeting took place in Moscow during the
InteRussia fellowship programme.

Students from Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Myanmar arrived to exchange experiences and learn about best practices in the sector.

“The meeting was, in my view, very useful and productive, because we welcomed participants from ASEAN countries who are already employees of relevant ministries. Some are heads of companies in the energy sector,” stated Daniyar Akkaziev, Executive Director of the Russia–ASEAN Business Council, in an exclusive comment to TV BRICS.

He also highlighted promising areas for joint work: the circular economy (focusing on the reuse of resources), the agro-food sector, the halal industry, finance and banking, information and communication technologies (ICT) and the digital economy, science, and education.

According to Akkaziev, ASEAN countries view the BRICS New Development Bank as one of the tools for financing joint projects.

“ASEAN countries are trying to understand how to use the opportunities of cooperation with BRICS in their interests. The President of South Africa is working to attract investors from ASEAN to Africa. We see that interaction between Africa and ASEAN is already under way.

Brazil is actively working with the ASEAN market. It is one of the world’s largest suppliers of halal chicken meat. This means we are speaking not only about supplies but also about the possibility of occupying a dominant position on the market,”
noted Akkaziev.

The development of the digital economy is inseparable from the energy sector, because computing systems processing databases require large amounts of energy. Interns from ASEAN countries confirmed their interest in the development of green energy and support from partners in BRICS.

“ASEAN countries show the highest global demand for the transition to green energy. Liquefied natural gas and natural gas are a promising basis for creating a new joint business market for Russia and ASEAN. […] I know that BRICS has a Development Bank in Shanghai, and it supports projects in ASEAN countries,” shared his view, in an exclusive comment for the media network, Muhammad Dhery Mahendra, a business development specialist at an Indonesian company.

A representative from Vietnam, Bui Minh Phuong of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, noted the importance of not only financial investment but also educational support.

“Vietnam really needs this. We need not only investment but also support in education. In Vietnam there are energy courses, but only for undergraduate studies, not for the master’s degree,” she noted.

The InteRussia fellowship programme is implemented at St. Petersburg State University of Economics in cooperation with the Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, the Russia–ASEAN Business Council and the TV BRICS International Media Network.

In
2024–2025, TV BRICS has already acted as a co-organiser of InteRussia programmes for specialists from Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in the field of theatre arts.
