Geophysicist from China speaks about creation of compact device for high-pressure experiments

The scientist also reported on cooperation with researchers from BRICS countries

Ho Kwang Mao is the Director of Center for High Pressure Science and Technology Advanced Research, told TV BRICS that he is developing a unique device for conducting high-pressure experiments that fits in the palm of your hand. According to him, such a device can be used in any conditions, including in space.

He noted that the main difficulty is creating and maintaining constant high pressure, which is still a difficult task from a technical and financial point of view. The development of a small but effective device will enable important research to be carried out that is useful for the creation of spacecraft, as even a gram of material requires hundreds of tons of fuel to be launched into orbit.

In his work, Ho Kwang Mao actively collaborates with scientists from BRICS countries.

“In BRICS, we work with Brazil. We recently travelled there to organise joint work. As for Russia, about half of my group, or at least a third, are from Russia. So many talented people come from there. I love working with colleagues from your country,” he said.

Ho Kwang Mao is confident that studying the properties of materials in extreme conditions will open up new opportunities and, over time, lead to cheaper technologies, which will be an important step in space exploration.
