GITIS students presented their production of the play “The Cherry Orchard” in China

The International Festival of Arts opened in Guilin city

Students of the directing faculty of GITIS presented Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” at the World Theatre Education Alliance (WTEA) International Festival in Beijing. The production was directed by Egor Kovalev, a final year student.

After the successful showing of “The Cherry Orchard” in Beijing, the Gitisovs attended the opening of the International Arts Festival in Guilin.

This year, WTEA participants were invited to Guilin so that theatre schools from all over the world could show their works, share their teaching experience and ideas for the development of theatre education. The organisers hope that through the new integration, the member schools of the World Theatre Education Alliance (WTEA) will learn more about China’s traditions and the theatre culture of different countries.

On the opening day of the festival, the jury named the best actor and actress from each school. The best from GITIS were Semyon Shestakov and Evgeniya Leonova.

In Guilin, the screening of Yegor Kovalev’s play was held in the open-air area of Shan Shui Park, followed by a discussion of the production.

The directing faculty of GITIS will return to Moscow, and the acting faculty will fly to China to show the production of The House with the Mezzanine and Other Chekhov Stories at the One Belt, One Road Festival in Shanghai. The director is Professor Olga Yakushkina.
