Global solar energy installations reached a historic milestone in the first half of 2025, increasing by 64 per cent and adding 380 gigawatts (GW) of new photovoltaic capacity worldwide, as reported by
El Maipo, a partner of TV BRICS, citing an energy think tank.
The figure confirms solar power as the fastest-growing source of new electricity generation globally and highlights its central role in the energy transition, the source claimed.
China accounted for the majority of the expansion, installing 256 GW in the first six months of the year, more than double the combined total of all other countries, which together added 124 GW.
This represents 67 per cent of global solar capacity growth. Analysts attribute the surge in China to developers accelerating projects ahead of new regulations on renewable energy compensation introduced in June 2025.
Outside China, India became the second largest contributor to new solar power capacity. The source also noted an increasing uptake of solar technology in Africa, where imports of Chinese solar panels rose by 60 per cent over the past 12 months.
