India and Argentina sign lithium exploration agreement

Argentina has granted India the right to explore lithium in Catamarca province

Indian and Argentine companies have signed an agreement establishing the South Asian company’s exclusive rights to manage five blocks of lithium brine in Argentina and assess the possible presence of the mineral.

If deposits are found within a radius of 15,703 hectares, India will be able to start commercial exploitation and production of the precious material, said the document signed under the supervision of India’s Ministry of Mines.

The country’s Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi described the opportunity as historic for India and Argentina. This is reported by
Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

He said that the signing of the agreement between the companies signifies a step that plays a crucial role in creating a sustainable and diversified supply chain of essential strategic minerals needed by various industries in India. In addition, various technical and operational expertise will be brought in.

Lithium and its compounds have a wide range of industrial applications, including heat-resistant glass and ceramics, air conditioning and humidity control systems and ionic batteries.
