
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the year 2026 will be marked as the “Year of ASEAN–India Maritime Cooperation”, underscoring the growing strategic and developmental partnership between India and Southeast Asia. This is reported by

Speaking virtually at the 22nd ASEAN Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he highlighted that joint efforts between India and ASEAN in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, maritime security, and the blue economy have been expanding steadily.
“Our collaboration in sea security and the blue economy is rapidly increasing. Seeing this, we declare 2026 as the ‘Year of ASEAN-India Maritime Cooperation’. With this, we are strongly promoting bilateral cooperation in education, tourism, science and technology, health, green energy, and cyber security,” Modi said.
In a joint declaration, ASEAN member states and India
reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sustainable tourism and preserving cultural heritage. The document highlighted the sector’s contribution to economic growth, employment, infrastructure, and cross-cultural understanding.
The leaders further committed to conserving historic sites, integrating traditional arts, crafts, gastronomy, and museums into tourism strategies, and strengthening cooperation through digital innovation and institutional partnerships.
The ASEAN–India Year of Tourism 2025 is expected to serve as a key platform for advancing these shared goals and enhancing regional connectivity.
