India deepens trade engagement with South American nations through new negotiation rounds

India has concluded two major rounds of trade negotiations with South American partners, underscoring its commitment to enhancing economic ties and expanding market access across the region, the government announced on Thursday, reports
IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

The ninth round of talks for the India–Peru Trade Agreement took place in Lima earlier this month, achieving progress in areas such as trade in goods and services, customs procedures, dispute settlement, and cooperation on critical minerals. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to concluding the deal soon, noting the complementarity between their economies.

India’s Ambassador to Peru, Vishvas Vidu Sapkal, said the agreement would create new opportunities in sectors including pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles and food processing. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for January 2026 in New Delhi.

In parallel, India and Chile held the third round of talks for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Santiago. The discussions covered investment promotion, intellectual property rights, and supply chain resilience.

The Indian Ministry of Commerce said that the growing engagement with Chile and Peru reflects the country’s broader focus on deepening cooperation with South America through mutually beneficial trade frameworks.
