India launches initiative to boost agri-food start-ups and target US$50 billion in exports

A new initiative dubbed “BHARATI” has been unveiled to empower 100 agri-food startups, foster innovation, and drive exports towards a US$50 billion target by 2030, according to government sources.

The initiative is designed to accelerate the growth of agri-food and agri-tech startups, promoting innovation and creating new export opportunities for young entrepreneurs, ultimately strengthening India’s agricultural and processed food exports.

Beginning this September, the initial pilot programme will support 100 startups, encompassing high-value agri-food producers, technology-driven service providers, and innovators. This is reported by
IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

The initiative will focus on fostering innovation in high-value categories such as Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged agri-products, organic foods, superfoods, novel processed Indian agri-foods, and livestock products. The project also seeks to attract startups specialising in cutting-edge technologies like AI-based quality control, blockchain-enabled traceability, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled cold chains, and agri-fintech. It will also address critical areas such as innovative packaging, sustainability, and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) protocols.

According to the source, the pilot programme will serve as a template for a scalable annual incubation initiative, fostering continuous innovation and long-term export growth.
