India on track to become third-largest global economy by 2028

The country’s growth will also be driven by a substantial increase in infrastructure investment

India is projected to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2028, with its GDP more than doubling to reach US$10.6 trillion by 2035. This was reported by
IANS, a partner of TV BRICS, citing a report from a multinational investment bank.

This forecast includes the emergence of several Indian states – namely Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka – each potentially growing into US$1 trillion economies and entering the ranks of the world’s top 20 economies within the next decade.

The report underscores the pivotal role of India’s states and Union Territories in driving this growth. These states are not only central to fiscal management but also compete to attract investment through favourable policy environments and ease of doing business.

India’s rise is also bolstered by a substantial increase in infrastructure investment. Over the last decade, central government capital expenditure has doubled, resulting in a 60 per cent increase in highways, a doubling of airports, and a fourfold expansion of metro systems.

India’s rise as a global manufacturing hub hinges on effective competitive federalism, with strong central–state collaboration in key sectors like energy, water, and urban development crucial to sustaining growth and boosting per capita income.
