Indonesia develops AI-driven malaria detection

New system leverages advanced imaging and machine learning to identify malaria parasites with greater speed and accuracy

Researchers from Indonesia are working on an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered system to detect malaria parasites by analysing blood samples.

The technology, developed by a national research institution, uses advanced imaging techniques to identify different malaria species based on cell shape and size, as reported by
Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

A lead researcher involved in the project explained that the AI examines microscopic blood smear images to automatically diagnose malaria infections. One of the key challenges is accounting for the parasite’s changing structure during its life cycle, but the team is confident the system will enhance malaria detection efforts.

The initiative also aims to foster cooperation between research institutions, health authorities, and technology experts to ensure the AI meets local healthcare needs.
